The Solaxx Saltron Retro saltwater chlorine generator is a self-contained purification system designed for above ground and inground pools up to 20,000 gallons.

This self-contained purification system utilizes a natural process to generate pure chlorine. The electrolytic process uses a very low concentration of salt (less than a teaspoon per gallon) and generates free chlorine. The chlorine continuously kills bacteria and algae and then reverts back to salt.

do you have to use the salt system and a sand filter?

To use saltwater in an above ground pool, you would need any standard above ground filter system and a Saltwater system (also known as a chlorine generator). You can use a sand filter , a cartridge filter, or a D.E. filter.

The Saltwater system will turn the salt in the pool water into chlorine. Here’s a good article on saltwater pools which may help you: http://blog.thepoolfactory.com/saltwater-pools-buyers-guide/
